Case Study: The clock tower, The Hendre, Monmouthshire

Constructed in the Victorian Gothic style, the house was the childhood home of Charles Rolls, the motoring and aviation pioneer and the co-founder of Rolls-Royce. The house is Grade II* listed and is now the clubhouse of the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club.

Cintec International were invited to put forward a scheme for the structural repair and stabilisation of the clocktower which had deteriorated substantially over the previous decade.

The stone quoins were detaching from the brickwork and rusting tie bars were causing further damage by the expansion due to rusting. A complete survey of the structure was carried out to determine the scope and extent of work necessary and to devise a suitable conservation scheme which would not have any visible impact on the Grade 2 listed structure.

The carved ornamental quoins were loose and detaching from the main brick walls. As may seen in left image the existing iron ties were also causing damage and were distorting.

At each selected level a band of Cintec anchors were inserted around each face of the tower with anchors overlapping at each corner
